Not far from Perast, in the waters of Risan bay, there are two small islands. One natural, and the other artificial, these two islands make an unbreakable part of the bay landscape; the legend and the tradition which accompanies them makes them even more attractive for visiting. The Island Sveti Djordje preserves the remains of a benediction monastery from the XII century and a church by which it got the name. During the XIX century Napoleon’s forces stayed on the island. When we are talking about Gospa od Skrpjela, it is an island which people from Perast created by them, and the legend says that it used to be a smaller crest on which one day an icon of Gospa od Skrpjela was found. People from Perast built the temple with their own forces in the honor of Gospa (LADY), which today is an example of great skill of Perast architects, baroque painters and icon painters. The walls and the arches of the temple are painted after the one decade of work by the motifs from the Bible – so it is no wonder that the greatest connoisseurs of art claim that the decoration of this church is the greatest work of the domestic artist on the entire east Adriatic coast. Next to the church there is a smaller museum which keeps valuable exhibits from the long history of Perast and these two islands. more ...
